How to Create a Home Library

I am a firm believer that every home should have a library. It doesn’t have to be a dedicated room (although if you have the space, I say go for it!), nor does it need it be impressive. All that you need is simply a quiet space with a bookshelf or two, and a comfy place to read.

The nook above is the inspiration for my own home library, as it’s situated in the same corner of our downstairs games room. Incidentally, this image is the most re-pinned on my personal Pinterest account! This goes to show that at least there are people still interested in keeping actual "real" books these days. A well-stocked bookcase will always feel more homely than a stack of kindles. Just sayin’.

So how do you go about creating a home library?

Pinterest is a great place to start – so if you haven’t got an account, go ahead and sign up! (It’s free). You’ll find libraries of all shapes and sizes, but be warned… it is a literal vortex of visual delight, and before you know it your whole day will have passed and your family will come home and ask what you’ve been doing all day and … (please tell me I'm not the only one?)

Seriously though, let's begin.

  1. Create a space in your home. This might sound pretty straightforward, but give it a bit of thought first. You’ll want a place that is quiet, cosy and most of all – accessible. Books and bookshelves are heavy. You don’t want to be constantly moving them around if you change your mind.

  2. Add bookshelves. Measure your space and decide on a style and colour that suits your home. There’s no point having a library that resembles a Victorian bookstore if your home is modern and minimalistic! If you can afford it, I’d recommend getting custom made shelving. But a have a look around, there are many different budget-friendly options out there – just make sure the ones you choose are sturdy enough to support your collection.

  3. A place to sit and read. This could be an armchair, sofa, or even a beanbag – but comfortable seating is a must! Consider how you like to read – do you like to sit up straight, lounge around, legs crossed or feet curled up under you? Do you need an ottoman? Prefer to have a child or pet beside you? Take into consideration your spatial dimensions and how much seating you require. Once again, keep in mind the aesthetic of the room and choose your seating accordingly.

  4. Adequate lighting. Unless you want to compromise your vision, avoid reading in low light conditions. If you like to read by day, then set up your library near a natural light source like an open doorway or large window. If you’re more of a nocturnal reader, then you can’t go past a good floor lamp. Try not to rely on overhead lighting alone. It’s just not strong enough and can cause squinting if too bright. Table lamps are best left for mood lighting only.

That’s the absolute essentials – except for your books of course! However if you want to add a little more mood to your home library, you can always include:

  • Rugs, cushions and throws to create a cosy feeling

  • Coffee table, side table or ottoman to hold a drink or snack (also helpful to put your book down if you need to get up for a bit)

  • A ladder or stool if you’re fortunate enough to have high ceilings, or you are short in stature (or both, like me!)
